The Art of Ajrak — A Living Tradition
Ajrak is one of India's oldest textile traditions, born in the Kutch region of Gujarat over 4,000 years ago. Skilled Khatri artisans hand-carve intricate geometric and floral patterns onto wooden blocks, then print them layer by layer onto cotton fabric using natural dyes derived from indigo, madder root, and pomegranate rinds. Each print takes up to 14 meticulous steps to complete. The Daman Print is the iconic border band along the hem — a signature of authentic Kutchi craftsmanship. Gamthi Tabla motifs are the distinctive medallion and paisley patterns that cover the body of the garment, inspired by centuries-old temple and folk art of Gujarat.
